Ottawa isn’t the only place where a single-use plastic ban is being discussed.
Lunenburg town council will hear a presentation at their meeting Tuesday night from the group Plastic Free Lunenburg.
Speaking for the organization, Teresa Quilty says a number of local businesses have already taken the initiative to remove single use plastics.
“We are right now in a position in Lunenburg where we actually have a lot of momentum and it would be a better consumer and visitor experience if everything was consistent and clear.”
She wants the town to be among the front runners of this movement.
“It’s a great promise but at this point it’s still just a promise. Nothing is guaranteed to happen. So that’s another reason that we need to act. Let’s not wait and then find out it doesn’t happen in the end.”
Quilty says the federal government’s decision to go ahead with a single-use plastic ban just adds more weight to their argument that eliminating single-use plastics from the town is the right thing to do.
She hopes town council will adopt their recommendation to ban the single-use plastics and says the town should speak loudly and proudly that they are ahead of the game.
