Halifax-based developers have snapped up more properties on King Street, Bridgewater, with the goal of redeveloping them.
Black Seal Properties purchased the former Bank of Montreal building earlier this year.
Now they’ve purchased two other King Street properties, including the old Gow’s Furniture building (641 King St) and a vacant lot (527/535 King St) where several buildings were destroyed by fire in October 2017.
The company is asking for amendments to the Town of Bridgewater’s Municipal Planning Strategy to negotiate height and design elements for their planned developments.
Black Seal is requesting an allowance of four storeys on one of the buildings.
Current bylaws state buildings over three storeys can only be built on corners.
They’re also looking for the Town’s help in coming up with solutions for parking as the developments will be mixed use residential and commercial.
“We have reviewed all possible parking options and have determined the only viable solution would be to use the right hand side of the property (as viewed from King St.) as an entrance to the back of the building,” explains Black Seal in their council documents. “The tenant would access covered parking, which would be large enough to accommodate all of the residential units. To accommodate this, a garage door entrance is required. Existing King Street zoning restrictions do not allow garage door entrances.”
UPDATE: Town council passed a motion Monday night to hold a public meeting regarding changing the Municipal Planning Strategy. The meeting will be held June 25.
