It’s International Left Handers Day! While I’m a right handed guy, I grew up with my younger brother who was a lefty and got to see first hand all of the trials and tribulations of a southpaw living in a right handed world.
First , the positive side – studies show that left handed people are more creative, imaginative and have more rhythm than the rest of the world. And the typewriter/computer QWERTY keyboard has the most common letters from the most common words grouped for the left hand.
That’s where it stops.
Virtually everything in the kitchen is designed for right handed people. Lefties have to deal with measuring cups with the measurements on the wrong side. Ladles with the pour spout on the wrong side. And worst of all – can openers.
Then there are rulers, measuring tapes and scissors.
At the office lefties have to deal with pens that don’t dry quickly enough and smudge their hands or a whiteboard with lovely colored ink all over their hands and wrists. Coil notebooks were another hassle unless you were willing to flip them and start from the back.
Musicians and players in team sports have had to deal with instruments and team equipment designed for right handers.
So, as we celebrate Left Handers day tell me about the biggest annoyance you Southpaws have experienced in a right handed world.
