College and University Students Face Mandatory COVID-19 Testing, Isolation Period

Post-secondary students coming into Nova Scotia for school from outside Atlantic Canada will be tested for COVID-19

Premier Stephen McNeil announced today students starting or returning to the province’s colleges and universities from outside the travel bubble will be tested upon arrival and will be required to self isolate for 14 days.

Students will be tested three times from their arrival to the end of their isolation, regardless if the first is positive or negative, said McNeil.

“Every campus will have a testing site on it,” he said.

“We have worked with our university communities from one end of the province to the other. Every campus will have a place for them to be tested, they will know of those students when they arrive in the province and tests will begin on their first day here.”

Students from outside Atlantic Canada will not be allowed to attend in-person classes until their isolation period is complete.

He said the extra testing for students shouldn’t overwhelm the current public testing capacity provided by Public Health.

McNeil also announced a new digital border access form, which is required to be filled out by any adult traveling to Nova Scotia from outside Atlantic Canada.

He said the new digital form will help speed up the entry process at provincial borders, as all that is required to be shown is the confirmation email travelers will receive after filling out the form.

A digital check-in system will also soon replace the compliance calls travelers receive daily during their 14-day isolation.
