98 Years Ago: Halifax Explosion

A significant event in Halifax history is being remembered today.

It was 98 years ago when two ships collided in the city’s harbour, causing one of the most devastating man-made explosions in the pre-atomic age.

More than 1,800 people were killed and another 9,000 injured.

The blast also destroyed almost the entire north end of the city and could be heard hundreds of miles away.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax will hold a number of special events today.
