Queens Mayor Reflects On August Wildfires

A tireless summer for firefighters from Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne counties who helped battle large forest fires.

The month of August saw fires break out in Seven Mile Lake, Maitland Bridge, Greenfield, Ten Mile Lake and Clyde River.

Dozens of local firefighters as well as some from out of province worked for over two weeks before all fires were extinguished.

Overall, more than 420 hectares of forest was burned.

Region of Queens Mayor David Dagley wasn’t mayor at the time but still believes firefighters deserve recognition.

“We are appreciative of all the efforts of all of our fire departments and volunteers in Queens. We also are very thankful that outside county departments have helped and assisted in some of our efforts as they always do.”

Dagley says volunteers also stepped up to provide food and beverages for firefighters.

The fires cost the province approximately $3.5-million.
