The Nova Scotia Midget X Winter Hockey League season is officially underway.
The league was launched by Hockey Nova Scotia to offer high school players a place to play due to the ongoing labour dispute between teachers and the Nova Scotia government.
The Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation no longer sanctions high school hockey during work-to-rule job action.
Jamie Myra is the head coach of the South Shore team.
“There is 21 young men that wanted to play hockey and four dads from kids on the team stepped up, had their certification, jumped on board and thought we would put a team together and enter them into the league.”
He’s pleased that the league was created.
“I think it’s definitely the right decision. It’s giving the young men a place to play which is, ultimately, all that anyone was asking for.”
Four regional leagues boast 33 teams across the province including 11 in this area.
The South Shore will play 10-12 regular season games against opponents from Yarmouth, Annapolis Valley, Shelburne and Clare.
Teams will then compete for a provincial championship as part of the SEDMHA Minor Hockey Tournament in April.
The South Shore will play their first game Saturday night at 7 p.m against the Acadia Wildcats at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.
