Several community organizations in Queens County will be looking for a new home.
Regions of Queens Municipal council has declared the former Mount Pleasant School building in Liverpool as surplus.
Queens County Food Bank, Queens Day Care, Queens Learning Network and the Queens Family resource centre will have to relocate before June 2019.
Mayor David Dagley says the organizations all provide vital services to Queens County.
“We’ll work with those groups to look for alternate locations over the next two years. We’ll try to have a smooth transition to continue their services in Queens.”
Dagley says the building needs $250,000 in upgrades on top of any regular maintenance and the municipality just can’t sink that much into an aging building.
“We’ll continue over the next two years to ensure that the tenants have access to a building that functions well. We will not put the large amount of rebuild into that building if it’s going to be surplus.”
Dagley says once the building is empty, council will decide whether to sell the building as it is or demolish it.
