Several Fire Departments In Our Region To Receive Naloxone Kits

It’s part of a pilot project through Emergency Health Services to help counter the effects of opioids to those who overdose as well as first responders.

Shelburne County is one of the first five areas to receive the kits, along with Queens County and Lunenburg.

Police and EHS already carry naloxone.

Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department Chief Darrell Locke says they have responded to two opioid overdose situations.

He says first responders are also at risk.

“Even touching the person and being in close proximity to the drug is as dangerous for us as anything else. A very small amount of drugs fentanyl type drugs, opioids, can be deadly to anyone who comes into contact with them.”

Locke says his members will receive training when the new kits arrive.

“That will be provided through EHS to medical first responder members, our department. It’s expected the kits are going to rollout in November for the first five counties.”

A full provincial rollout is expected in the new year.
