Shelburne: Municipality Holds Tax Rates in 2019-20 Budget

No tax rate increases for residents or businesses in the Municipality of the District of Shelburne.

The municipality recently approved their budget.

Council maintained the residential and resource tax rate at $1.26 and commercial rate at $1.82 per $100 of assessment.

Warden Penny Smith says it’s a positive move.

“We take our position serious,” says Smith.”

“We know that these are public funds and we are going to utilize them to the best of our ability for the benefit of our residents.”

Smith says their main capital budget item is expanding internet though the county at a cost of $1.14-million this year.

They are currently working with Bell Aliant on a $5.25-million Fiber to the Home project, which would bring high-speed Internet to at least 95% of rural households.

“We continue to wait for federal and provincial funding but we are cautiously optimistic that this project will begin in the near future.”

She says they need those two levels of government to be on board with support before any improvements will be made on that issue.
