Political Science Grad from Chester Represents Riding in Daughters of the Vote

A political science graduate from Chester has been selected to sit in Bernadette Jordan’s chair for a day.

Olivia Corkum is participating in the Daughters of the Vote program, launched by Equal Voice to engage more women in politics.

The 23 year-old Corkum says she’s extremely grateful for the opportunity.

“Currently, there is only 26 per cent of females that hold a seat in the House of Commons,” says Corkum.

“I think that number definitely needs to increase in order for our voice to be heard.”

Corkum will get a chance to sit in the House of Commons and make a statement.

She will also attend question period, and leadership and policy sessions before the experience ends Thursday.

“I did some campaigning for Bernadette back in 2015 when she was elected,” says Corkum.

“I also grew up and my neighbour was Barbara MacDougall, who was a cabinet minister. I had a lot of really good female role models.”

Corkum is planning to go back to school in the fall for public relations with hopes of one day entering the political sphere.
