Maud Lewis Exhibit Visit To China Back On

An exhibit of the works of Maud Lewis will be going to China after all.

Earlier this month, the province was told by the Guangdong Museum of Art in China that the exhibition had been postponed.

No reason was given.

Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Leo Glavine tells CJLS News Premier Stephen McNeil deserves much of the credit.

He says McNeil has been to China six times and is highly regarded there.

“He wanted to see the culture mission moved forward. In deliberation with China’s ambassador to Canada, they felt that it should go forward. We’re about to embark in late April.”

China had postponed the exhibition earlier this month but gave no reason.

Glavine says there’s great potential for cultural tourism.

“People, not just from Japan and China, I think will want to go to that area. Where did Maud live, how did she live, and that famous little house that became a symbol of who she was.”

Maud Lewis was born in Yarmouth then lived in a small house in Marshalltown, Digby County with her husband.

The exhibition also features the works of six other contemporary female Nova Scotian artists.
