Community Support Helps Score ‘Burg Classic Hockey Tournament Success

Organizers of the ‘Burg Classic Charity Hockey Tournament are calling this year’s event “one of the best.”

The tournament, in its seventh year, has raised more than $100,000 for local individuals in need of financial aid.

Committee member Lisa Tanner says she estimates they will make between $25,000 and $30,000 this year.

“The community never fails to amaze us with their support and donations through money and silent auction items or just showing up and buying lots of 50-50.”

Tanner says once the money is tallied, they will start giving it to the eight recipients they’re supporting this year.

She says that’s what makes the event memorable.

“Because we’re helping deserving families every year,” says Tanner.

“Every cent that comes in gets divided up. I think it’s the whole focus of the weekend.”

She adds, planning has already begun for next year’s event in Lunenburg.

The Blockhouse Rum Runners and Barrington Chiefs were this year’s recreational and competitive division champions.
