Lunenburg and District Fire Department Add Drone to Improve Service

Firefighters in Lunenburg have a special piece of equipment to help them in emergency situations.

The department has purchased a drone for roughly $4,000.

The funds came from memorial donations after the passing of former deputy chief Kendall Black.

Chief Darren Romkey says he’s excited to use the drone and see how it can enhance their service.

“You’re always looking for ways to help the community as best you can,” says Romkey.

“It’s something that’s not going to be used every day but when it is used I think it’s going to be a big asset for us. With mutual aid departments around, we have equipment that somebody else doesn’t, they can call us and we can bring it out.”

Romkey says the drone could help in emergencies including brush fires, motor vehicle crashes and search and rescue operations.

He says as far as he knows, they are the first South Shore fire department to have a drone.

A number of Lunenburg firefighters are expected to be trained in the next couple weeks on how to use the drone before it’s officially put to use.
