DNR Reminds People to Stay Safe During Wildfire Season

There has been plenty of wet weather lately, but don’t let that deceive you from thinking its safe to burn.

Fire Prevention Officer with the Department of Natural Resources, Kara McCurdy, says people should still take precautions.

“If you’re burning grass or leaves, you want to make sure you have your piles all clear of anything that’s combustible,” says McCurdy.

“Clean up your yard in the Spring so that if there is a grass fire and it does spread, that it’s not going to reach any structures or anything around your property.”

McCurdy says the province has had its fair share of reported grass fires this spring and they can be avoided.

She says things like grass can also be raked up and put roadside in the compost bin or in the woods.

Burn restrictions are in force until October 15.

McCurdy encourages anyone to check restrictions online before they decide to burn.

“We set those daily burn restrictions for public safety,” says McCurdy.

“If it’s a green day you can burn after 2pm; if it’s a yellow day it is after 7pm; and if the map is red, we recommend you don’t burn at all.”

Firefighters fought 190 wildfires in Nova Scotia last year, with most happening in the spring.
