Improvements are being made to the outdoor space at Hebbville Academy.
A committee was created and parents, teachers, students and other school staff brainstormed ideas on making the property the best it can be, according to Erin Ramsay.
“We’re going to be putting up some large chalkboards on our outdoor fence area and we’re creating a giant pea gravel, almost like a sandbox,” says the grade one and two teacher.
“Where we can shovel and dig and play with trucks, and we’re also going to improve our wooded area.”
They are looking for donations including used pots and pans, topsoil, mulch, large stumps or logs and sidewalk chalk.
Other donations include bags of compost, clipboards, gravel and garden spades.
Ramsay says the donations will enhance the area and hopefully increase time outside for kids.
“We want learning opportunities outside of the classroom as well as improving our recess play opportunities,” says Ramsay.
“We want kids to have more to do outside, more unstructured free play and connections with nature.”
The group is also planting trees and shrubs.
If people have items they are looking to donate, they can leave a message at (902) 541-8284 to arrange a drop-off or pick-up time.
