Province Announces Grants to Prevent Domestic Violence, Support Victims

Three local groups have received provincial funding in their efforts to prevent domestic violence.

The South West Nova Transition House Association or Juniper House received $10,000 to develop a youth advisory group through high schools in Shelburne County.

It would determine the impacts and realities of violence for those who identify as women and live in rural Nova Scotia.

The Shelburne County Youth Health and Support Association got just over $8,100 to establish a 12-week program to empower young women in two Shelburne and Lockeport high schools to make healthy life choices.

And Petite Riviere Elementary School was given almost $4,000 for its Boys Day project.

It will offer a day of learning for boys in grades 4-6 across the South Shore.

Topics could include gender equality, healthy relationships, LGBTQ, internet safety, gaming, and building self-confidence.

The three groups are among 24 province-wide who received funding through Standing Together, the Nova Scotia Government’s plan to support domestic violence victims and their families.
