Annual Campaign To Show Support For Women And Children Who’ve Been Abused Is Underway In The Tri Counties

A campaign to raise awareness about violence against women is underway.

Yarmouth’s Juniper House Purple Ribbon Campaign takes place until December 10th.

Wearing a purple ribbon shows your support for abused women and their children and the desire to live in a violence-free community.

Executive Director of Juniper House Lisa Newell-Bain talks about the services they provide.

“We have a 15-bed shelter located here in Yarmouth. We also offer a 24-hour crisis line, as well we have outreach services to Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties. That way, women won’t have to be a resident of the shelter in order to receive the services that we provide and the support that we offer.”

Newell-Bain says abuse of women comes in many forms, physical abuse being only one kind.

Abuse can encompass sexual, financial or verbal abuse as well as abuse of civil and economic rights.

She says the eradication of gender-based violence remains a crucial task, as children who witness violence at home are more likely to be part of the same cycle as adults, either as perpetrators or as casualties of the abuse.

Purple ribbons are available at Juniper House or at their display at the Yarmouth Mall.

Visit Juniper House on Facebook for more information on the campaign.
