Operation Christmas Aimed At Preventing Impaired Driving Over The Holidays

The Holidays aren’t an excuse to drink and drive.

Operation Christmas launched today and it’s an annual campaign to prevent impaired driving.

First responders from across the South Shore and Halifax Regional Municipality came to discuss impaired driving over the Christmas season.

Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey also spoke today and says the campaign is timely because they see a rise in impaired drivers during the holidays.

“In those social environments we see a higher consumption of alcohol, and other substances to be quite honest,” he says.

“One of the important elements about this time of year and one of the messages that we want to get out is planning for those events.”

Bridgewater Police Chief Scott Feener says parties over the season has led to a higher rate of impaired driving in the month of December.

He mirrored Furey’s sentiment of planning ahead when attending parties or events.

He says there are always alternatives to getting behind the wheel – people can call a taxi, stay overnight, get a ride home with a friend or any safe alternative to getting behind the wheel.

“If you’re out having a good time, a decision you make that night could affect the rest of your life so make a wise decision and plan ahead.”

Eight check points have been set up around Bridgewater.

Operation Christmas runs until Dec. 31st.
