National Poetry Registry In The Works

Canada’s official poet is putting a call out to writers from across the country.

The parliamentary poet laureate wants to create a national poetry registry and he’s looking for applications from coast to coast.

Rebecca Thomas is the Poet Laureate for Halifax and often represents the province.

She thinks it’s a great idea but wants to make sure it’s done right.

“I’m always critical of these things to ensure that it does encompass more that just one type of voice,” she says. “And that is white, middle aged, you know, settler person. I’d like to see voices from immigrant poets, I’d like to see indigenous voices, I’d like to make sure that there’s gender diversity, so not just women and men but those who are intersex and those who are trans and all those sorts of things.”

Thomas says she intends to submit one of her own works to be considered for the registry.

MP Bernadette Jordan is collecting poems from the South Shore.

She plans to draw three entries tomorrow that will be submitted to the parliamentary poet in Ottawa.
