“Campaign School” Coming To Bridgewater

A group from Halifax wants to seem more people running in the municipal election this October.

The Springtide Collective is putting on workshops across the province to teach people how they can participate.

Executive Director, Mark Coffin, says people often feel overwhelmed with the process of running for office.

“People may not feel that they have what they need to run successfully and get elected to municipal politics,” he says. “So, the target audience is people who need a little more before they make up their minds.”

Coffin says more diversity is needed to help fully represent each community.

He says about a quarter of the seats in municipal elections go uncontested.

“It’s no surprise that most of the people around the table are male, are often retirement age,” says Coffin, “and of course people from communities of visible minorities and people with disabilities often don’t participate.”

Coffin says they can help whether you want to run or just help out on someone else’s campaign.

The workshop will be held at the LCLC on May 14th.

It’s free for those who register.
