Women Making Strides In Municipal Government

The President of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities says it’s nearing its goal of 30% female representation in municipal governments.

Laurie Murley says the aim was established in 2005.

And efforts they’ve made to encourage more women to run are paying off.

The results of the 2016 elections had 38% of Nova Scotia’s mayors as female and women represent 27% of all councils.

Town of Bridgewater Councillor Cheryl Fougere feels this is a positive move.

“It’s nice to see more women being presented and giving their perspective on their views. So I think there is more balance around the table at council.”

Fougere says the increase in female representatives is encouraging.

“There’s definitely been an increase and I think there’s been a definite a change in trying to educate women in saying that they have an important voice, let’s bring their perspective to the table.”

The United Nations says women need to make up at least 30% of decision-making bodies before they can affect change.
