Parliament Taken Over By Women

Three-hundred-thirty-eight women filled the House of Commons today. One from every riding in the country.

They heard from a number of federal leaders and even got to rise and ask questions about issues they’re passionate about.

Ellen Hiltz is there representing South Shore-St. Margaret’s.

“Seeing all the seats filled with women is absolutely indescribable. The vibe in that room is so positive and so powerful. It’s all so wild and my mind is racing.”

Hiltz says she still isn’t sure if she plans to put her own name forward for office one day.

But she says she feels inspired to use her skills in some way to help build a better Canada.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Trudeau says it’s inspiring to see so many women roaming the halls of parliament.

He says it underscores the need to keep pushing for equality.

“To put things in context there have been 315 women MPs elected in the history of Canada, and there are 338 of you here now. We have an awful lot of ways to go.”

The Daughters of the Vote program aims to inspire the next generation of female leaders in Canada.

The women head home tomorrow with a promise to share what they’ve learned with other women from their communities.
