Remembering 9/11: When Atlantic Canada stepped up

It has been 25 years since the world was changed. I think many of us know exactly where we were and what we were doing on September 11, 2001.

While the world remembers the tragedy of 9/11 and the thousands of lives that were lost, Canadians also remember something else: the incredible response that followed.

When U.S. airspace was shut down that morning, Canada launched Operation Yellow Ribbon, diverting hundreds of international flights to airports across Canada.

Here in Atlantic Canada, communities didn’t hesitate.

Many people immediately think of Gander, Newfoundland, and for good reason. The small town welcomed thousands of stranded passengers and became known around the world for its generosity. Nearly 6,700 passengers and crew on 38 aircraft landed there, in 2001 the population of Gander was just under 10,000. The story would eventually inspire the musical Come From Away.

Halifax played a huge role, too. Halifax Stanfield received 40 diverted aircraft carrying more than 7,000 passengers, making it the Canadian airport that handled the most planes during the operation.

Airport staff, emergency responders, volunteers, community groups, and everyday Nova Scotians stepped up. Schools, churches, community centres, and homes opened their doors. People donated food, clothing, transportation, and whatever else was needed to help complete strangers feel safe and welcome.

Across Atlantic Canada, communities rallied together to help travelers who suddenly found themselves far from home with no idea how or when they could return.

The anniversary of 9/11 will always be about remembering those who lost their lives and honouring the first responders who ran toward danger that day. But it’s also a reminder that even in the darkest moments, people are capable of extraordinary generosity.

On a day that changed the world, Atlantic Canada showed the world its best side.
