Sexual Assault Services Lunenburg- Queens is using April to let victims know there’s help available when they’re ready to come forward.
Coordinator Dianne Crowell says there are many reasons a survivor might choose to stay quiet.
She says there’s no standard way to react to the trauma of being assaulted.
“Some people will laugh, some people may go silent,” she says, “some people will talk about something that’s not even part of the issue that’s happening to them. That may be perceived as lying.”
Crowell says the medical professionals they partner with have been trained to help victims deal with what’s happened no matter what their reaction.
She hopes as people become aware of the service more will be empowered to step forward.
