Lawyers Wait For New Evidence In First Degree Murder Case, Adjourned Until May 11

The first degree murder case against John ‘Jack’ Buckley has been adjourned until May 11.

The 22 year-old faces the charge in the 2012 death of his mother, Victoria Brauns-Buckley, at her Chester Basin home.

Buckley was originally charged with second-degree murder and spent nine months in jail before the case was dismissed.

Crown Prosecutor Leigh-Ann Brison says an RCMP homicide investigation has been ongoing and will present new evidence over the next month.

“At this stage, the focus is disclosure. Further disclosure is anticipated and we’re expecting that a substantial amount of disclosure will be made within the next month.”

A first degree murder charge implicates the death of Brauns-Buckley was planned.

Meanwhile, defence lawyer Pat MacEwen says he has received very little information.

“The police continued their investigation. They feel they have more information now then what they had before. That remains to be seen. We’re still waiting to see what, if any, new information they have gathered in the last few years.”

Buckley was at court but remained in a holding cell.

MacEwen says his client is not doing great after being accused of killing his mother.

Buckley has been remanded into custody.

He will have to apply for bail through the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.
