UPDATED: Shelburne Mayor Says NS Health Authority Executive Salaries Are Too High. Health Authority Responds

The mayor of Shelburne says salaries paid to executives and staff at the Nova Scotia Health Authority total more than $73 million.

She says that’s totally unacceptable given the state of health care in this province, particularly in rural communities.

Karen Mattatall shared a Facebook post she says is from a report from the province’s Auditor General for the health authority for the fiscal year ending March of 2017.

She says it’s very concerning.

“When you see the large amount of money that is being spent on administrating the Nova Scotia Health Authority when we don’t have doctors, people are without access, people are without services.’

Mattatall says 10 people are making over $250,000 a year while seven people make over $200,000.

Here is a statement emailed to Acadia News from the Nova Scotia Health Authority:

“Compensation for management and non-union positions is considered through the Hay Job Evaluation Method, a process administered by the Health Association of Nova Scotia. The evaluation is meant to determine the value of jobs in relation to other jobs to ensure consistency and fairness throughout the sector and recommend placement on the appropriate salary scale based on the job content.

Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) balances the needs of the health care system with the need to recruit and hire talent. These levels of compensation are reasonable, given the education, skills and experience to fulfill job requirements as well as the need to stay competitive when recruiting.

Compensation, including wage rates for both our unionized staff and management, is in the middle of the range of salaries nationally. The salary of our employees is within the approved salary range, whether union, management/confidential non-union-non management, or management. Wages of unionized employees follow collective agreements.

Less than three per cent of NSHA employees (617 people) are listed as receiving compensation of $100,000 or more.”
