‘Strangles’ Case Confirmed In South Shore

At least one case of strangles has been confirmed in the South Shore.

The disease effects horses and is a highly contagious bacterial infection.

Symptoms include fever, heavy nasal discharge, and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes.

The case was confirmed in Shelburne county.

Dr. Allison MacKay-Lyons at South Shore Veterinary Hospital says horse owners need to be aware.

“When we have a confirmed case, it’s really important that we stop transfer of horses from the barn where the horse lives and quarantine the horse for six to nine weeks.”

Strangles can be transmitted through sharing equipment or direct contact from nasal secretion.

Owners should call a veterinarian if their horse is showing symptoms.
