Fort Mac Residents Could Return Home By June 1

Light rain and cooler temperatures are being credited for one of best days in Fort McMurray in recent weeks.

A re-entry plan is tentatively set for June 1 for residents to start returning to the fire-ravaged city.

Bob Couture, Director of Emergency Management, says it depends on some circumstances.

“Two critical factors, of course, is the threat of the fire and air quality. And those may cause those dates to be set back.”

Weather conditions on Thursday helped return air quality in Fort Mac to almost normal levels.

Emergency and other services including electricity and water also must be available.

The mayor of Wood Buffalo, Melissa Blake, says things are progressing.

“With the re-entry process that was announced by the province yesterday, it makes me feel more confident that we might be able to achieve the dates set out and we very much look forward to welcoming our residents home soon.”

Over 80,000 people fled the city on May 3 due to wildfire that has now reached Saskatchewan.
