Ballots will be recounted in Chester – St. Margaret’s.
The NDP candidate, Denise Peterson-Rafuse, has filed for one after the incumbent lost to Liberal candidate Hugh MacKay in the May 30 provincial election by 90 votes.
Peterson-Rafuse forwarded an interview request to her election campaign committee chair, John McCracken.
He says they were prompted for a recount after 800 out of district ballots were brought to their attention after midnight on election night.
“We’ve asked for the recount and a recount will happen. As far as the rest of it and the balloting process, that’s what were trying to ascertain right now. That’s a longer process; we have 30 days to finish off that process.”
Peterson-Rafuse was leading MacKay by 46 votes before out of district ballots were counted.
Just over eight percent of voting in Chester – St. Margaret’s was done outside the riding.
Meanwhile, MLA-elect Hugh MacKay says Peterson-Rafuse is well within her rights to ask for a recount.
“If I was sitting in her office I’d be doing the same thing. It’s not surprising and I’ll speak more to it once the recount is complete.”
MacKay says 90 votes is a significant number.
He says he looks forward to serving voters in Chester – St. Margaret’s.
The recount is scheduled for June 12.
