Yarmouth’s First ‘Death Cafe’ To Start Later This Month

It’s still considered a taboo subject….Death.

A movement called Death Cafe is changing that.

Its objective is to increase awareness of death through conversation.

There’s a Death Cafe in Shelburne and now Yarmouth will have one.

Bertha Brannen is a Grief Recovery Specialist and will be the facilitator of the Death Cafe.

Brannen says people used to talk about death, and were comfortable with it.

“Families used to keep the body of their loved ones in the home. Children were certainly a part of that. But that allowed a conversation about death as a part of life. And so we we moved to using funeral homes, I think we kind of lost the idea that we should be talking about death as a part of life.

The owner of SIP Cafe in downtown Yarmouth has donated a room for the group to meet on June 27.
