Yarmouth Ferry readies to sail but Baillie wants to see the numbers

The contracts are signed and the new Yarmouth Cat ferry will sail in roughly two weeks.

Bay Ferries and the Town of Yarmouth reached an agreement to use the port this week.

Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says she’s determined to see the ferry succeed.

“We’ve seen what happens- not just to an entire town but to an entire region and this whole end of Nova Scotia when the service didn’t exist.” says Mood.

“[The Cat’s] a very recognized brand down the North-Eastern Seaboard,” says Mood. “but the idea is to get as many people over here as we can.”

PC Leader Jamie Baille says he wants more transparency around the province’s investment.

He’s looking for Bay Ferries to release monthly ridership updates.

“For all Nova Scotians, the people who pay the highest taxes in the country and are paying the bills- $100 million for that ferry, for them to be able to judge for themselves whether the government has made a good deal or not.”

“I really do hope that it brings a lot of people here because Nova Scotia taxpayers are paying a lot of money for that boat.” says Baillie, “and as expensive as it is, we all have to hope it works.”

He says despite the lack of transparency, he hopes the investment pays off.

The Cat starts sailing on June 15th.
