Halifax Rescue Mission Expanding To Bridgewater

A group in Halifax has identified a need to help people living in poverty in Bridgewater.

Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is expanding to the South Shore.

Executive Director Michelle Porter says they want to help those in need.

“Not just people who don’t have enough money to make ends meet but people who need a sense of community, people with mental health issues who need to find a friend and a safe place during the day.”

The inter-church food bank has experienced increased demand while donations have decreased.

Vicky Sovie has operated a soup truck in the area since last November.

She will manage the new centre in Bridgewater once a location is found.

“We don’t see people here living on the streets and homeless as we would see in larger city centres but the needs are really visible when we stop and really look.”

Sovie hopes to have the new centre open by the end of summer.
