Lobster Season Was One of The Best In A Decade: Lobster Association

The president of the Coldwater Lobster Association is pleased with how this season worked out for fishermen.

The six month lobster fishery ended this week in Fishing Areas 33 and 34, spanning from Eastern Passage through the South Shore to Digby County.

Bernie Berry says LFA 34 had a very good season.

“This season was probably one of the best, if not the best in the last 10 years. A combination of good catches, very good price and very good weather, which went a long way to having good landings.”

Berry says fishermen were pleased to receive $6 to $6.25 a pound for their catch for the majority of the season.

He expects roughly 55-million pounds of lobster was caught in LFA 34.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will release official numbers this fall.

However, it wasn’t all good news.

A fishermen from Cape Breton lost his life after falling overboard off the coast of Yarmouth when the season opened on November 30.

Berry says it’s a dangerous profession and they are trying to be safer and mitigate those types of incidents.
