Chester: Commission Wants Village To Stay

The Village Commission in Chester is waiting on a decision from the province.

Recommendations were forwarded to the Nova Scotia government on the future of villages.

The Municipality of Chester is looking to phase out villages in the next five years. Brenda Mulrooney is with the commission. She says they would like to control their own direction.

She says, “We don’t want to have to ask somebody’s permission and then have six people from outside the village decide whether or not we should be allowed to have it or not. Right now, we are from the village on our Village Commission and we can determine whether or not we can afford it or not and go from there.”

Mulrooney says they are lobbying provincial politicians to consider keeping villages and their status in Nova Scotia.

Other municipalities provided input to the Liberal government as part of a fiscal review.

A decision is expected in the near future.
