The newest president of Doctors Nova Scotia has officially taken taken the reigns.
Dr. Michelle Dow was installed during the association’s annual conference.
Dow won Nova Scotia’s Family Physician of the Year in 2014.
She now works out of the Clare Health Centre in Digby County with her team of five physicians.
Dow says her main focus is getting the agreement with the province finalized.
“As a lot of people know, we’ve got a tentative contract,” she says, “it’s to finish the contract and hopefully ratify the contract, so that’s probably my number one goal.”
Beyond the deal with the government she has a number of goals in mind.
Dow also has a commitment to local student recruitment.
“We keep in touch with those students throughout their entire medical school,” she says, “so we’ve had even up to eleven students from our area in medical school at one time.”
She says mentoring students is the best way to get new doctors to stay in rural Nova Scotia.
Dow will remain president until June, 2017 when Dr. Vohra will take over.
She says she’s looking forward to the upcoming year.
