A vigil in Yarmouth for victims of the Orlando, Florida massacre was well attended.

About 200 people made their way to Frost Park on Wednesday afternoon to remember and honour the 50 killed and 53 injured in a gay nightclub shooting on Sunday.

Adam Dolliver is the Executive Director of SHYFT Youth Services in Yarmouth and says the turnout was better than he expected.

“I was really shocked and so pleased about the cross section of people. We had everyone there from infants all the way up to seniors and it was completely supportive.”

Dolliver is originally from Cape Sable Island and is openly gay.

He lived in Halifax for a number of years before moving to Yarmouth two years ago.

Dolliver has been active in raising awareness for the LGBTQ community.

“Just trying to make those in roads and trying to bring a little bit more awareness and try to pull Yarmouth up and get them on par with Halifax.”

Dolliver says when he moved back to Yarmouth, he felt the community was ten years behind Halifax when it came to the LGBTQ community.
