Royal Canadian Legion Calls Prime Minister’s Comments “Insensitive”

The Royal Canadian Legion is condemning recent remarks made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

During a town hall meeting Monday in Edmonton, Trudeau said that the Canadian government is still fighting ‘certain Veterans groups’ in court because “they are asking for more than we are able to give right now.”

In a release, the Legion says the comment angered many in the Veteran community.

Don McCumber, District E Legion Commander for the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command, which includes Yarmouth County and the South Shore, says the remarks are very upsetting.

“I watched that particular question, the question asked by the veteran who had lost a leg in Afghanistan. He made a great sacrifice. To hear those comments was very upsetting to me. I don’t understand why the government will not support our veterans and meet their needs and requests. I don’t think it’s too much for our veterans to ask.”

McCumber says the government needs to look after Canada’s veterans for the sacrifices they’ve made, not insult them.
