Emergency Coordinator Stresses Preparation Ahead Of Heavy Rainfall

Rainfall warnings are in effect for much of the South Shore.

Environment Canada says lots of rain is on the way for Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties.

The weather agency expects between 80-100 millimetres of rain to fall between tonight and Saturday.

The winds won’t be much of a factor but will gust at times to 60 km/h.

Meanwhile, people should take precautions around their property.

Emergency Management Coordinator, Heather MacKenzie-Carey, says it’s important to make sure drainage areas are clear.

She says you should also prepare the inside your home.

“That would mean making sure sump pumps are working, moving things to higher ground if you typically have a wet basement.”

MacKenzie-Carey says the heavy rainfall could cause local flooding and road closures.

She says people should have a plan in place for a worst-case scenario.
