Lockeport Councillors Take Pay Cut Due To Budget Deficit

Town council in Lockeport has chosen to take pay cuts to help ease the burden on its tax payers.

Severe winter conditions led to higher expenses and a deficit between $20,000 and $30,000.

Four councillors and Mayor Darian Huskilson chose to cut $500 from their honorarium.

Huskilson says the $2,500 can help cover some costs.

“That’s fixing up a sidewalk, that’s an extra day of snow removal, it’s money that maybe can go into a different social program or something.”

The town also had to raise their commercial and residential tax rates by three cents.

The cuts took effect in April when their budget was finalized.

Huskilson says council takes pride in their budget and made a responsible decision.
