Not A Big Turnout For Shelburne Policing Info Session

The Town of Shelburne will have to make a decision soon whether or not it will renew its contract with the RCMP.

The council is considering a proposal from the Bridgewater Police Service that would see them police the town.

The public were encouraged to attend an information session last night in Shelburne and ask questions.

About 50 people turned out.

Mayor Karen Mattatall would have liked to have seen more, especially from the Town of Shelburne.

She said there were quite a few people there from Bridgewater and the Municipality of Shelburne.

Mattatall says the proposal is a good fit for her town.

She says they would get four-and-a-half Bridgewater officers, the same number as they currently have from the RCMP

“Those officers would be only dedicated to the Town of Shelburne, where currently, because it’s a federal force, they are available to the rest of eastern Shelburne County and probably even the (entire) county.

Mattatall says the town can’t keep paying $737,000 for the Mounties each year.

They would save $100,000 annually for the RCMP.

It’s nearly one-third of the town’s budget.
