Urgent Call For Blood Donors

There is an urgent, national plea for blood donors.

Canadian Blood Services says it needs 35,000 donors across Canada to meet patient needs leading up to the March break.

They’re asking for people to step forward by the 10th of next month.

Peter MacDonald, Director of Donor Relations for Atlantic Canada, says the national blood inventory has been in a steady decline over the winter months.

“Last week we had great results in the Tri-County area but unforunately on Monday we had a power outage where our event in Clare didn’t run. Those are just some examples of what can happen in the winter months that affect our collection.”

MacDonald says part of the problem is that the next generation of donors aren’t being engaged.

He says urbanization is also a factor with more people moving to larger centres.

MacDonald says they don’t respond with the same level of donor numbers as rural areas.
