Single Mother Grateful For New Home in Bridgewater

A single mother of four says it’s overwhelming to know a home is being built for her family in Bridgewater.

Heather-Ann Slade has struggled to find an affordable, decent place for her family to live.

The family has moved nine times since 2011 due to a combination of rent prices, inadequate space and costs of heating in the winter.

“Housing has been very, very difficult in the Town of Bridgewater and right now we’re in a very expensive rental in the center of town and we’ve had a hard, hard time trying to access alternate housing.”

She applied to Habitat for Humanity’s affordable homeownership program and found out in May she would partner with them on the new build on LaHave Street.

The home will be a three bedroom, single storey bungalow once it is complete.

Slade says it feels like a huge weight has been lifted from her shoulders.

Her family is volunteering 500 hours of sweat equity at the build site and the local YMCA and will pay a no down payment, no interest mortgage once they move in late this fall.
