Volunteers Needed To Adopt A Highway

May 4th is Adopt-A-Highway Day in Nova Scotia and the call is out for volunteers to jump on board and “adopt” a highway.

This marks the 13th year in row that the province has recognized the program on this day.

Adopting a highway or section of highway, is a sort of pledge from volunteers to help keep a particular section of highway free from litter for 3 year increments.

Those who participate or “adopt” a highway, then have their name/organization on a sign installed along the highway.

“It’s great publicity and it just shows motorists that the roads are being cleaned as well; it’s actually been proven that the signs can help reduce litter, or there’s less litter,” says Amy Langille, Program Administrator for the Adopt-A-Highway Program.

The program itself also has positive benefits such as helping to keep wildlife away for the roads and highways. Less litter means fewer animals in and around the highways, reducing the potential for animal / vehicle collisions.

Langille notes some of the positive benefits of the Adopt-A-Highway Program.

“Helping with wildlife, aiding with tourism, making our province as beautiful as it can be and helping the environment,” adds Langille.
