Premier Tight Lipped About Election Call

There’s been quite a bit of speculation if there will be a general election this fall.

But the man making the decision isn’t spilling the beans.

Premier Stephen McNeil says he hasn’t given the date for a general election any thought.

He says his party is gearing up for a by-election to replace retiring former interim NDP leader Maureen MacDonald.

“There will definitely be an election in Needham this summer or fall. There’s four people running for that, we’re excited by that. Looking forward to that nomination meeting and then we’ll set a date for the people there to go to the polls.”

The Premier says despite having nomination meetings for his incumbant MLAs, he hasn’t given the potential date for a general election any thought.

“I’m preparing our party for a general election some time in the future. I sent a directive to all incumbents to start their nomination process. That’s as much for me to make sure who’s running and who isn’t and getting their teams ready.”

McNeil says his party is holding nomination meetings in all their ridings to ensure their candidates and teams are ready for when an election is eventually called.
