Advocacy Group Wants More Community Involvement In Offshore Drilling Decisions

A new organization is hoping for more public involvement in offshore oil exploration.

Marilyn Keddy is a member of the Campaign to Protect Offshore Nova Scotia.

She says the current regulator, the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board, is made up of too many oil industry veterans.

“We feel it is critical that it is changed if we are going to protect our fragile fishing areas off the coast.”

Keddy says community members as well as representatives from the fishing and tourism industries should be on the board.

The campaign believes no more licenses for drilling should be issued until the process becomes more democratic.

Keddy says the group will continue pressuring the federal government until changes are made.
