-Update- Group from Queens To Sponsor Syrian Refugee Family

We have an update about group from Queens who is trying to bring a Syrian family to the South Shore.

The Queens Refugee Care Team has been working for about a month gathering support from the community.

Chairperson, Sheila Redden-Smith says they’ve been making steady progress, but the new Liberal government might affect their timeline.

“Trudeau has announced that they’re going to be bringing in 25,000 Syrians now,” she says. “So they could be coming in a lot faster now and that could speed us up as well.”

Redden-Smith says they’re hoping to sponsor a family of six, but she says it’s been more difficult than she thought it would be.

“I think I was overly optimistic…counting money that was coming in,” she says.

Redden-Smith says they’ve raised $9,000 so far but they need another $7,000 before they can officially apply to sponsor a family.
