Distracted Drivers Keep Emergency Vehicles From Answering Calls Safely

Motorists are reminded to get out of the way of emergency vehicles.

There is worrying evidence that more drivers are distracted and not paying attention.

Shelburne RCMP is concerned this is delaying the arrival of first responders and ultimately putting people at risk.

“One of the big culprits is people just simply don’t hear emergency vehicles as well as they used to. You have much better insulated vehicles and you have people listening to music playing people or listening to the radio,” said Sgt. Ben Parry, attachment commander of the Shelburne RCMP.

Sgt. Parry also stresses the importance of keeping an eye on the rear view mirror.

Drivers also need to remember that under the under the motor vehicle act there are rules to follow.

If you’re driving where there are multiple lanes of traffic travelling in your direction, you’re required to move to the left-hand lane and slow to 60 km/hr. And when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the right hand side of the road, you are required to switch to the left lane and also slow to 60.
