If you’re out swimming, you may want to keep an eye out for algae blooms. The algae is blueish-green and has a soupy appearance and at times gives off a distinct smell. Environmental Health Director Gary O’Toole says if you notice a bloom, it’s best to avoid contact or swim near the area it’s spotted. He says people should not drink or fish in a river or lake where algae is present. O’Toole says boiling the water will not get rid of the toxins. If blooms are spotted give the Department of Environment a call and report where it is present.
