Maritime Sports Reporters And NSCC Team Up To Honour Fallen Humboldt Announcer

Local sports writers are working to honour the memory of one of the victims of the Humboldt bus crash.

Media covering the Maritime Hockey League have teamed up with Nova Scotia Community College to provide a bursary in the name of sportscaster Tyler Bieber.

The money will go to a student enrolled in the Radio Television Journalism course with a particular interest in sports journalism.

Michael Petter does play by play for the local Pictou County Weeks Junior A Crushers.

He says his peers were quick to get behind the idea.

“I wanted to do something to show some solidarity between the broadcasters of Junior A hockey here in the Maritimes and Tyler Bieber, the play-by-play voice of the Broncos and broadcasters in the SJHL.”

Petter says Beiber’s family was supportive of the idea.

“Tyler’s family was incredible. They jumped on board immediately and said, ‘Yeah, we’d be so honoured.’”
